Practical tips and personal stories about emigrating, living (buying/renting) and building.
let us introduce ourselves
Emigrating to Crete
We are Monique and Richard. In October 2022 we emigrated from the Netherlands to Crete with our dog Pip. Monique was 49 years old at the time and Richard was 48. We bought a piece of land in Kalyves, a small village on the north side between Chania and Rethymnon, and had our dream house built on it by a local contractor. Our house was completed in December 2023 and in the meantime we had temporarily rented a house near Chania. This way we could keep a close eye on the construction and arrange everything that was needed on site.
We both had our own company in the Netherlands. Monique worked as a graphic designer and website builder and Richard worked as a project manager and Lean consultant
in the financial sector (until 1/1/2022) and together we owned a crowdfunding platform. We have been living in Crete for several years now and we have not regretted our choice for a single day.
